Bajaj India launched the world’s first CNG-fueled hybrid motorcycle, the all-new Bajaj Freedom 125 which can be fueled by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and petrol as well.
CNG is a popular and cost-effective fuel amongst the car and auto drivers of India. The additional mileage of CNG with cost-effective prices has been a trait which attracts all drivers and auto enthusiasts from around the country.
Now Bajaj has achieved a phenomenal step in integrating CNG fuel into a petrol motorbike. This hybrid is a duel fueled motorbike with an engine compatible with both petrol and CNG fuels. Bajaj likes to call this the bi-fuel technology. Bajaj also claims to reduce fuel as well as maintenance costs by 50%.
Bajaj CNG Bike Tank Capacity
The Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG Bike has a traditional petrol tank of 2 litres. Just below this petrol tank, a CNG tank with a capacity of 2 Kg is fitted. Bajaj claims to have achieved a range of 330 km. Bajaj also claims to have a range of around 205 km and when combined with the petrol range, it can travel up to 330 km.
CNG is an eco-friendly fuel which is pressurised at room temperature and the actual fuel filled in the CNG tank majorly depends upon the pressure at which the pump is pumping the gas. When combined with conventional fuels like petrol, alternative fuel like CNG proves to be a game changer for long-distance travel as for cars too, it can give a range of around 150 – 280 km in a full tank.
The price of CNG has always been 22% to 25% cheaper as compared to conventional fuels. So looking at all the merits of this fuel, Bikers always wondered can they could fit a CNG tank into their bike and the answer is finally here. Though the efficiency and drivability of this Freedom 125 CNG bike are yet to be discovered, Bajaj has taken a bold step to introduce some innovation into the motorbike industry.
Sporty Design
The Bajaj Freedom 125 comes with an exposed trellis frame which looks raw and sportier. The build also looks modern but robust. The seat finish looks seamless and the suspensions are mono-linked type suspensions which are first-in-class. The riding experience does look very comfortable with some elements of ruggedness here and there.
The LED features Bluetooth connectivity which shows real-time ride data and various other features. The odometer, speedometer, fuel gauge and other vital information are presented on the LED screen itself and there is no analogue cluster for such info.
Bajaj CNG Bike Engine Specifications
As the name suggests, this bike comes with a 125cc engine. It produces a max power of 9.3 bhp @ 8000 rpm and the max torque produced is 9.7 Nm@ 6000 rpm. The engine specs are the same for all the variants of the Bajaj Freedom 125. The top speed is capped at around 93 kmph. It features a 5-speed manual transmission gear. The cooling system used is the typical air-cooled cooling system featured on most of the mid-range bikes.
Bajaj CNG Bike Fuel Efficiency
Bajaj has hit a milestone by combining conventional fuel petrol and an alternative and cost-effective fuel CNG into one setup which was earlier seen in only cars. This combination helps in enhancing the range of the vehicle while also understanding and undertaking the changing emission norms in the country. The Bajaj Freedom 125 is made on the BS6 Phase 2 characteristics and the emission levels are superbly controlled as there is no emission of other pollutants as it is in the case of alternative fuels.
Bajaj claims a total range of330 Km in a full tank while only the CNG kit may provide a range of up to 102 per kg. So, technically the range is only limited to about 220 kilometers as the petrol tank may be used as an auxiliary fuel supply.
Bajaj Freedom 125 Maintenance & Service Costs
Overall, the maintenance costs of CNG vehicles are on the lower side as compared to conventionally fueled vehicles. The low wear and tear of the engine causes the service costs to be less and the long life of the engine, battery, gearbox and other essential components.
Bajaj has a wide network of showrooms and service outlets across India so servicing and maintaining the Freedom 125 is an easy task. The servicing cost may vary from city to city and the average cost to service the bike may range between Rs.400 to Rs.1500 per servicing. The initial maintenance and servicing may be free and the labour cost and any product costs if incurred while servicing may be charged to the consumer.

Overall, Bajaj has made an impeccable move by introducing the world’s first CNG bike into its lineup. This economic move is adored by not just regular consumers but also leaders like Nitin Gadkari and others. This surely has brought a lot of limelight to this bike and the word of mouth for this bike is spreading like wildfire.
Some of the pros of the Bajaj Freedom 125 are high fuel efficiency due to the introduction of CNG which helps lower the fuel costs and the riding experience too, feels smooth.
But, due to the limited availability of CNG refilling stations in some of the states, it may be a win-or-lose situation for Bajaj to tap this bike to the required consumers. The initial costs may also be on the higher side compared to a normal petrol-driven bike.
